Yaroslavna is inspired by a 12th century Russian epic poem, The Tale of Igor's Campaign, retracing the story of Prince Igor's abortive attack on the Polovtsians in 1185. In Tishchenko's score, we recognize the influence of Japanese music and in particular gagaku. The end result, very modern, contrasts sharply with Alexander Borodin's classic opera, Prince Igor, which is nevertheless inspired by the same poem. The premiere of Yaroslavna took place in 1974 at the Maly Operny Theater in Leningrad with a choreography by Oleg Vinogradov and directed by Yuri Lyubimov. The ballet became one of the greatest Russian ballet successes of the 1970s, as well as Tishchenko's best-known work.
