Mountain Men is a band consisting of French guitarist Mathieu Guillou and Australian harmonica player Ian Giddey.
It was in 2005 that the history of the group began. Mathieu Guillou, known as "Mr Mat", meets Ian Giddey, known as "Barefoot Iano", during a jam session. Mathieu Guillou is a French guitarist and Ian Giddey is an Australian harmonica player, who has accompanied Graeme Allwright and Riké from Sinsemilia.
In 2006, they performed at the Blues sur Seine springboard and won the Electro-Acoustic Prize. The self-produced album Spring Time Coming was released in May 2009. The same year, the group was rewarded at the Cognac Blues Festival. In January 2010, they played in Memphis during the International Blues Challenge.
During Alain Bashung's last tour, they opened for the artist for one night. It was there that they met and signed with Echo Production, who would reissue their album Spring Time Coming. The album was nominated for an Award in Memphis in the category of best self-production of the year.
In 2012, their second studio album, Hope, was released, with a large number of musicians (Marion Ferrieu, Victor Démé, Anne Temperville, Catherine Simon, Patrice Bon, Arash, Ben, Dim and David, David Laurent, Guillaume Marocco, Piero Martin, Yves Béraud, as well as Dams & Brain). The album contains as tracks Egotistical and a cover of Nirvana's Smells like Teen Spirit. The band toured Burkina Faso for this album.
During their Hope tour, they played Brassens covers for three hours in Saint-Malo, in front of nearly 450 people. They decided to record this evening and make an album of it, Mountain Men chante Brassens which will be released in 2014.
The band broke up in 2019 and Mister Mat began a solo career. In 2022, he participated in the blind auditions of the French version of The Voice; he joined Vianney's team and reached the final, which gave him national notoriety.
