SigmArt, in partnership with Engadin Festival, is delighted to present the unique concert of the "Gershwin Piano Quartet" from St. Moritz, Hotel Reine Victoria.
The Gershwin Piano Quartet is a formation of four pianists who play on four grand pianos present their own arrangements of well-known works from the entire history of music. With his mixture of classical virtuosity and jazzy improvisational spirit, his combination of of lyrical contemplation and irresistible rhythmic drive, it provides a sensation at its concerts worldwide. At the center of the work of the Gershwin Piano Quartet is always the very personal confrontation with the selected works, which far exceed the usual boundaries of interpretation and are distinguished from the faithful to the actual new composition, to improvisation and remix techniques.
André Desponds founded the ensemble in Zurich in 1996. The first concerts still concentrated entirely on the music of the namesake George Gershwin, who is still an important part of the group's repertoire with her stylistic openness. Over the years, however, the palette has expanded noticeably and now includes music as diverse as one with many loops and piano preparation techniques, a version of Rimsky-Korsakov's "Shehearzade", an arrangement condensed into two movements from Beethoven's 5th Symphony, a polytonal fanning out of Astor Piazzolla's "Tango Fugue" from "Maria de Buenos Aires" to to an integral new version of Gershwin's "Concerto in F".
Among the many performances of the Gershwin Piano Quartet are concerts at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, the Ruhr Piano Festival, the KKL Lucerne, the Tonhalle Zurich, the Konzerthaus Dortmund, the National Palace of Culture Sofia (Bulgaria), the National Center for the Performing Arts Beijing (China) and the Sala Sao Paolo (Brazil).
