Coppélia (The Girl with the Enamel Eyes) is a comic ballet from 1870 originally choreographed by Arthur Saint-Léon to the music of Léo Delibes, with libretto by Charles-Louis-Étienne Nuitter. Nuitter's libretto and mise-en-scène was based upon E. T. A. Hoffmann's short story Der Sandmann (The Sandman).
The ballet's first flush of success was interrupted by the Franco-Prussian War and the siege of Paris (which also led to the early death of Giuseppina Bozzacchi, on her 17th birthday), but eventually it became the most-performed ballet at the Opéra.
This version of the Bolshoi makes a fascinating return to the original choreography and costumes, giving pride of place to the corps de ballet in great entertainments, including the famous "Dance of the Hours", as to the stars in overflowing footsteps, energy and humor. A comedy that brings together a heroine with a tough temperament, a fiancé with a wandering gaze and a mad old scientist!
Director: Choreography: Sergei Vikharev (after Marius Petipa)
Cast: Corps de Dance Bolchoi, Margarita Shrainer (Swanilda), Artem Ovcharenko (Frantz), Alexei Loparevich (Coppélius)
