For his coronation at Westminster Abbey on October 22, 1727, the future King George II asked Handel, who had become a British subject a few months earlier, to write the music for the ceremony.
Handel composes the four Coronation Anthems: "Let Thy Hand Be Strengthened" for the enthronement, the famous "Zadok the Priest" for the anointing (sung since at each coronation), "The King Shall Rejoice" for the coronation and "My Heart is Inditing" for the coronation of the queen.
Also performed are ceremonial works by Child, plainsong by Blow, an antiphon by Purcell, a Te Deum by Gibbons and Litanies by Tallis; all intertwined with superb fanfares and processions of drums and trumpets.
