Oberon, or The Elf King's Oath is a romantic three-act opera by Carl Maria von Weber, premiered on April 12, 1826 at Covent Garden, London. James Robinson Planché's English libretto is inspired by the eponymous German poem by Christoph Martin Wieland, itself based on the medieval epic Huon de Bordeaux. In the summer of 1824, Weber met at Marienbad the director of Covent Garden, Charles Kemble, who convinced him to compose an opera in English, either on the myth of Faust or on A Midsummer Night's Dream by Shakespeare. It is this second subject that Weber chooses to which he incorporates elements of The Tempest.
Oberon, the only English opera ever set by Weber, was based on the German poem Oberon by Christoph Martin Wieland, which itself was based on the epic romance Huon de Bordeaux, a French medieval tale. Against his doctor's advice, Weber undertook the project commissioned by the actor-impresario Charles Kemble for financial reasons. Having been offered the choice of Faust or Oberon as subject matter, he travelled to London to complete the music, learning English to be better able to follow the libretto, before the premiere of the opera. The autograph manuscript of the opera was donated by Emperor Alexander II to the National Library of Russia, where it is currently preserved.
