After a first and beautiful artistic meeting on the show Dios proveerá, the director David Bobée, the singer and director Caroline Mutel and the Ensemble les Nouveaux Caractères directed by the harpsichordist and conductor Sébastien d'Hérin had longing for new adventures. This time, they take on the Stabat Mater, the ultimate and sublime musical work composed by Giovanni Battista Pergolese in 1736, just before his death at the age of 26.
This work is based on a 13th century liturgical text meditating on the suffering of the Virgin Mary. Besides the religious figure of the mother, it is that of a sacrificed humanity whose pain is expressed in multiple ways that inspired David Bobée and Caroline Mutel. Their staging serves the music and unfolds in space and light. This Stabat Mater reflects their young and deeply human gaze, like that of its composer. By choosing to create a series of portraits of pain embodied by the bodies of dancers and circus artists, they show us how universal and timeless Pergolese's message is.
