Zakir Hussain is one of India's most illustrious musicians.
Son and pupil of the great tabla playerl Rakha, he went on stage from the age of 12, in the mid-1960s.
In the 1970s, he joined the adventurer John McLaughlin in the fusion group world-jazz-rock Shakti, and participates in other renowned trans-cultural projects: Ancient Future or Bustan Abraham.
But if he has worked to export and mix Indian percussion with other genres, he has also worked extensively within his home scene, notably alongside Ravi Shankar, or Hariprasa Chaurasia. Holder of a plethoric discography, and a breathtaking concert list, Zakir remains a generous stage character who advocates the ability to improvise as an essential resource of Indian music.
