Fred Hersch is an American jazz pianist and composer. He was the first person to play weeklong engagements as a solo pianist at the Village Vanguard in New York City. He has recorded more than 70 of his jazz compositions. Hersch has been nominated for several Grammy Awards.
First noticed as a sideman with Stan Getz, Joe Henderson and Art Farmer, Fred Hersch was a long teacher and became the teacher and thinker of Brad Mehldau. This pianist marked by the influence of Bill Evans is considered a key figure in American jazz. With numerous albums, at the head of multiple formations, ranging from one style to another as well as a composer as a performer, Fred Hersch has succeeded in establishing himself as a model of jazz piano, widely recognized for his technique and unparalleled sensitivity.
