SigmArt, in partnership with The Palaces of St Petersburg, is delighted to present the legendary Greek Tragedy "Orpheus and Eurydice" from the famous Hermitage Museum, on the 27th of October at 20.00 MSK (17.00 GMT), exclusive Live streaming on SigmArt TV.
The fascinating ancient Greek Tragedy about the all-conquering power of love and music will be performed by the brilliant Marita Paparizou Mezzo-Soprano from Greece, soloist of the Greek National Opera and guest of the most prestigious theaters in the world, together with Tsvetana Omelchuk, soloist of the Mariinsky Theater and guest soloist of the Bolshoi Theater, who conquered the audience with her vocal skills and the brightest acting gift.
In a large-scale production directed by Arkady Ghevondov within the walls of one of the most majestic halls of the country's main palace-museum, the images of the ancient Greek myth — frightening furies, infernal demons, disembodied blissful shadows — will be embodied by the chorus and ballet.
This unique event will offer extraordinary surprises, including the decision of the Artistic Director to have male parts performed by female voices, which will reveal the dramatic talents of the invited opera divas as vividly as possible. As per tradition, the production will feature a solo flute part, which is one of the most beautiful melodies in musical history, with its heartfelt sadness that will strike all listeners.
The piercing melody for the flute, along with the scene of Orpheus with the furies and the aria "I have lost Eurydice", are truly considered the pinnacle of Gluck's work and the music of the classical era as a whole. Gluck's work revolutionized music and changed the operatic tradition. It was based on the plot of an ancient myth: the legendary Greek musician Orpheus lost his wife Eurydice forever. The gods took pity on the suffering hero and allowed him to descend to the kingdom of the dead for his beloved and return her to earth, if he was able to conquer the masters of the underworld with his music. The main condition was not to turn to Eurydice in any case, bringing her out of underground oblivion. Having passed all the tests, Orpheus could not resist, turned to his beloved and she died again in his arms. According to the original source, the end of the story was tragic. However, the composer, in order to please the Emperor, changed the ending of the opera, and to this day the audience leaves the concert halls with smiles, being impressed by the story of the all-conquering power of love and the power of musical art.
