Arsilda, Regina Di Ponto is Vivaldi’s fourth opera. First performed in 1716 at Teatro Sant’Angelo in Venice, its author’s ambition was to establish his nascent domination over Venetian opera. Arsilda was a great success and was also performed in Dresden and Kassel and probably in Prague and Krakow.
Since the death of her husband, Antipatra, Queen of Cilicia, shares power with Cisardo, the uncle of her twins Tamese and Lisea, until the majority of the latter. Following a revolt, Tamese wins the borders of the empire with Barzane, the young king of Lydia, who is secretly promised to his sister. Guests of the King of Pontus, they both fall in love with his daughter Arsilda. Their friendship is shattered.
